Pochard

Pochard

The 200 meter long, 37384 dwt bulk freighter Pochard became disabled after suffering engine failure while proceeding along the Kiel Canal.   The crew were unable to restart the engine and requested a tow to Kiel, Germany.  At Kiel, the engine was fixed and the vessel resume its voyage to St. Petersburg, Russia from Dunkerque.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

The 116 meter long, 7014 dwt container ship Planet V became disabled while on the Westerschelde near Flushing, Netherlands after suffering an engine failure.   The crew proceeded to drop an anchor when the anchor chain broke.   The chain flung out and struck a nearby crewman killing him.  The container ship continued to go adrift and collided with the 27 meter long tug MTS Vantage which had been proceeding on a parallel course.  The MTS Vantage was damaged in the collision, but was able to proceed under its own power to Flushing.   The Plant V was taken under tow and returned to Flushing.

The 88 meter long, 3290 dwt freighter Kirsten went aground off Mikelbaka, Latvia.    The Kirsten was able to refloat itself and proceeded to Riga Bay.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.   Latvian Coast Guard launched an investigation into the incident.  Reports state one or more crew were intoxicated on the bridge at the time of the accident.
