Nellie M

The 35 foot long fishing vessel Nellie M sank while berthed on the Quillayute River at La Push, Washington. The vessel sank during the night with no one on board.  A sheen was reported around the sunken fishing vessel as 600 gallons of diesel fuel was on board at the time.  The harbormaster placed a boom around the site to contain the pollution released. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 90 meter long, 4560 dwt cargo vessel Unistar ran aground off Sodertalje near Stockholm, Sweden. The Unistar was en route to Hasselby from St. Petersburg  when it grounded just outside the Sodertalje Lock. The cargo vessel was able to refloat itself by its own means and proceeded to Hasselby.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

On March 23, the 1970 dwt cargo vessel Binh Duong 688 ran aground off the Hon Gom Peninsula near Saigon, Vietnam. The Binh Duong 688 was proceeding with 1900 tons of coal when a fishing vessel was spotted crossing in its path.  The cargo veered away to avoid colliding with the fishing vessel and ran up on to the rocks.  The cargo vessel sustained hull damage in the bow, cargo hold and engine room.  The Binh Duong 688 suffered water ingress and the engine room flooded.  All 9 crew on board were rescued safely.  Reports state the vessel still had some 6,000 litres of diesel fuel on board.
