On May 18, the 100 meter long, 1408 dwt passenger ferry KM Bukit Raya ran aground on a coral reef in the Lapma Strait near Riau, Indonesia.  The Bukit Raya was headed to Pontianak from Anambas with 248 passengers on board when it struck the reef. The ferry sustained hull damage and was holed along its starboard side allowing water ingress.

Authorities were contacted who dispatched several patrol boats to the scene. The patrol boats safely transferred the passengers off the Bukit Raya who were transported to Batu Hitam.  No reports of injuries. Reports state a salvage plan was being developed to refloat the Bukit Raya. Reports stated the water ingress did not impact the engine room and there was no damage to the vessel’s propellers.  Estimates state the vessel would not be refloated until early June.

The fishing vessel Adriana M caught fire south of Chacahua Bay, Oaxaca, Mexico.  The fire started during the early morning hours and quickly spread through the vessel’s superstructure. The 24 crew on board the Adriana M sent out a distress call and shot flares before escaping into life rafts. As the fire consumed the tuna boat, the 183 meter long tanker Centenario headed to the scene.  The tanker rescued all 24 crew along with 2 dogs from the Adriana M. and proceeded to Salina Cruz.  The cause of the fire was not reported.  No reports of injuries.

The 155 foot long towboat Jeffrey G with its string of 30 barges allided with the old bridge over the Mississippi River at Viscksburg, Mississippi.  The Jeffrey G was heading downriver when it struck the bridge with several barges breaking free.  One barge loaded with grain sank while several other barges floated downriver.  Other towboats were able to recover the barges that broke free.  No reports of injuries. Reports state the barges did not contain any hazardous materials.  The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.
