On January  10, the  367 meter long, 127015 dwt container ship Gustav Maersk ran aground in the Messina Strait near Torre Cavallo, Italy. The Gustav Maersk en route to Gioia Tauro from Rijeka entered the Messia Strait.  While it maneuvered to bring on a pilot, the boxship ran aground just off the shoreline.

The vessel requested assistance with two tugs responding.  The tugs were able to refloat the Gustav Maersk and the vessels proceeded to Gioia Tauro.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 207 meter long, 2700 dwt passenger cruise ship Thomson Majesty became disabled on the Mediterranean Sea near Livorno, Italy. The Thomson Majesty had departed from Livorno bound for Corsica when it suffered a total power blackout. The passenger ship went adrift for several hours before the crew was able to restore power. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. The Thomson Majesty returned to Livorno. No further details reported.

On September 1, the 105 meter long passenger ship Seadream 1 caught fire in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Palinuro near Naples, Italy. The fire started in the cruise ship’s engine room causing a power blackout and leaving the vessel adrift. Authorities were alerted and multiple patrol boats along with a ferry were diverted to the scene. All 105 passengers and a large number of the 61 crew were evacuated safely. No reports of injuries. The Seadream 1 was later taken under tow to Partenopeo by tugs. No reports of pollution released.
