Gloria Disabled

The 85 meter long self-propelled barge Gloria became disabled in the Mittelland Canal near Haldensleben, Germany.  The Gloria, loaded with 1289 tons of cement, had an open pipe which flooded the engine room.   The vessel contacted the local authorities who dispatched the local fire rescue to the scene.  Using a dewatering pumps, the water ingress was brought under control.   Some water from the bilge was spilled into the canal.   An oil boom was placed around the Gloria to prevent any further pollution being released.  The engine of the Gloria was no longer opperable and the vessel was towed to Haldenleben where it will be offloaded before taken to a shipyard for repairs.  No reports of injuries.  The open pipe was result of a pump being dismantled, but the pipe not being sealed.  The water police conducted an investigation and fined the vessel for water pollution.

Bydgoszcz BM 5257

Bydgoszcz BM 5257

The 56 meter long, 507 ton self-propelled barge Bydgoszcz BM 5257 allided along the embankment on the Mittelland Canal near the 269 kilometer mark.  The master of the vessel was unable to maintain his course in dense fog.  The BM 5257 hull was damaged and the vessel suffered water ingress.  The master of the vessel contacted the Oebisfelde fire department who found the vessel nearly sunk with water two meters high in the living quarters.  Using a submersible pump, the fire department were able to keep the vessel afloat until divers could make repairs.  The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.  The vessel did not have radar and lacked equipment to prevent it from sinking. The BM 5257 was proceeding from Poland to Wittingen with a cargo of 450 tons of fertilizers.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.

Reports state the inland oil tanker Tanya was detained on the Mittelland Canal near Lohnde, Germany, after a passing boater noticed a track of oil in the water.   The boater had alerted the master of the Tanya who contacted the authorities.   The local fire department responded and deployed an oil boom to keep the diesel fuel spreading into the channel.   Divers inspected the hull of the Tanya and discovered a 15 centimeter crack along the hull.   A special type of plaster was placed into the gap as a temporary repair to prevent further leaking.  The master of the Tanya reported that he had grounded the vessel earlier when he steered the vessel closer to shore to allow a passing motor vessel to go by.   Reports state 150 liters of diesel has been released.   The authorities have charged the master of the Tanya for water pollution.
