The 65 foot long, 104 gt fishing vessel Fate Hunter went aground near Shoup Bay, Valdez, Alaska.  The crew sent out a distress call reporting the vessel had gone aground with four people on board.  The nearby fishing vessel Akemi responded and safely transported the crew of the Fate Hunter to Valdez.  No reports of injuries or damage to the vessel.  The Coast Guard and state authorities are monitoring the vessel for pollution.  The Fate Hunter had 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel and 150,000 pounds of fish on board.

Janice Ruth II Sunk

The 47 foot long fishing vessel Janice Ruth II sank at its berth at Valdez, Alaska.   The vessel was discovered listed over to starboard submerged at the docks.  No one was on board at the time of the sinking.   Authorities placed an oil boom and sorbent pads around the vessel to contain the pollution released.  The Janice Ruth II has a capacity for 500 gallons of diesel and 24 gallons of hydraulic oil, but no details to how much was on board at the time.  Reports state the vessel was bank-owned.

Lively Jane Sinks

The 56-foot fishing vessel Lively Jane sank in Anderson Bay near Valdez, Alaska.   The Lively Jane had struck a submerged rock which holed the hull.   The crew sent out a distress call which was received by the nearby fishing vessel Alioth.   The Alioth rescued the 5 crew of the Lively Jane and contacted the Coast Guard.   The Coast Guard launched the 25 foot response boat which took the Lively Jane crew back to Valdez.  The Lively Jane had 75 gallons of diesel fuel and 25 gallons of lube oil on board when it sank.   No oil pollution has been spotted on the surface.   The owner has hired a firm to begin salvage operations and pollution control.  The Coast Guard is conducting an investigation into the sinking.
