The 52 foot long fishing vessel Quest sent out a distress call to the Coast Guard while off Westport, Washington. The Quest had suffered water ingress and the pumps on board were not able to keep up with the flooding.  The crew of four donned survival suits and were preparing to abandon ship.   The coast guard dispatched a helicopter along with the 47-foot motor lifeboat to the scene.  The helicopter arrived on scene with three of the crew in a liferaft and one in the water.  The helicopter hoisted all four men safely and were flown to shore where the crew were examined by medical personnel.  No reports of injuries.  The Quest later sank with some 250 gallons of diesel fuel on board.  The motor lifeboat arrived on scene and pulled the vessel’s EPIRB from the water and checked for released pollution.

Karanna

Karanna

The 37 foot long fishing vessel Karanna went aground near Neah Bay, Washington.   The crewman at the wheel had fallen asleep allowing the vessel to run aground just shy of the cliff-faced shoreline.  The three men on board contacted the Coast Guard requesting assistance.    The Coast Guard dispatched the 47-foot lifeboat to the scene, but was unable reach the fishing vessel which was resting in too shallow of water.   The three crew swam to the lifeboat safely.   No reports of injuries.   The Karanna had suffered some water ingress, but stayed afloat.   Reports state no fuel leaked and there was no pollution released.   Salvage efforts will begin when weather permits.

Ashlyne

Ashlyne

The 53 foot long fishing vessel Ashlyne became disabled near the entrance of the Columbia River.   The vessel’s cargo of 70,000 pounds of fish had shifted resulting in a heavy list.  At the same time, the sea conditions had swells between eight to 12 feet which increased the risk the Ashlyne would capsized.  The four man crew contacted the Coast Guard for assistance as they attempted to return to port. The Coast guard dispatched a Jayhawk helicopter along with the 47-foot motor lifeboat to the scene.   The Coast Guard then proceeded to escort the Ashlyne to Ilwaco, Washington.   No reports of injuries or pollution being released.   The Coast Guard has restricted the fishing vessel to port until it can be examined by inspectors.
