The 200 meter long, 63500 dwt bulk carrier Florentia allided with a quay at Southampton, England. The Florentia was being towed out to sea when it scraped against the quay wall breaching the hull. The result was a  four meter long hole in the side of the hull.

No reports of injuries. The Florentia was detained in Southampton to conduct repairs. Reports state the area was the former King George V dry dock and the entrance to the dock was narrower than the rest of the docks in Southampton.

On January 20, the 366 meter long, 147420 dwt container ship Manhattan Bridge suffered an explosion while berthing at the terminal in Felixstowe, England. A build up of steam caused the a back-fire explosion in the engine room killing one crewman and injuring another.  The explosion was loud enough to be heard by people living near the terminal.  The Marine Accident & Investigation Branch (MAIB)  has launched an investigation into the incident.
