On February 8, the 190 meter long, 56705 dwt bulk carrier An Yang 2 (IMO: 9563421) ran aground in the Sea of Okhotsk off Sakhalin Island, Russia. Reports state the An Yang 2 had a cargo of 1,000 tons of coal when it ran aground on the rocks just 650 feet off the coast. The vessel sustained hull damage with multiple ballast tanks holed, but there were no injuries to the 20 crew on board.

Local authorities have stated there is concern of pollution being released. The An Yang 2 had some 706 tons of fuel oil and there was a risk the fuel tanks would rupture on the rocks. Russian authorities have stated they will remove the fuel if weather conditions permit.

Authorities have stated the bulk carrier never sent out a distress call and there are questions on why the bulk carrier went aground. Russian media have suggested that criminal charges may be made against the crew.

 

Agorreta

On the evening February 1, a fire broke out on the 25 meter long, 238 gt fishing vessel Agorreta (ISO: 8874457) in the Bay of Biscay while berthed at Burela, Spain. The fire started in the galley while there was no one on board.  Fortunately, a witness spotted smoke coming from the fishing vessel and alerted local authorities. Nearby workers attempted to contain the blaze until the local fire brigade arrived on site. Fire fighters eventually extinguished the blaze several hours later. The Agorreta had sustained significant fire damage to the fish hold, bridge, kitchen and crew cabin.  However, the engine room and and much of the rig were saved.  The cause of the fire was not disclosed, but the affected area is where paints, plastics and diesel fuel were stored. There were no reports of injuries.

 

Atoll

On January 31, the 110 meter long self-propelled barge Atoll (MMSI: 211173200)  ran aground on the Main River near Karlstadt, Germany. The Atoll was en route to Ghent from Duisburg when it veered out of the navigation channel and became wedged between the two banks of the river.  Multiple tugs were dispatched and were able to refloat the vessel the following morning. The water police had halted traffic in the area during the incident. No reports of injuries or pollution released.  There were no reports if there was any damage to the Atoll. News reports state strong river currents may have caused the incident.
