On the afternoon of December 28, the motorized banca Jhon David capsized in the Olango Channel off Gilutungan Island, Cordova, Cebu, Philippines. The Jhon David departed from Getafe, Bohol with 18 passengers bound for Cebu City.  As the banca was off Gilutungan Island, the vessel lost stability and capsized.  The Philippine Coast Guard received reports of the incident and dispatched a search and rescue operation.

Fourteen passengers were rescued by the 24 meter long, 249 gt passenger ferry Ocean Jet 10 (Official No: 07-0000196) who were later safely transported to Cebu City.  Two passengers were rescued by a nearby banca. The Philippine Coast Guard rescued the two banca crew members. There were no reports of injuries.

The adrift Jhon David was later recovered off Cuaming Island, Bohol. The Coast Guard attached a towing line and secured the banca.

Philippine authorities conducted an initial investigation in Cebu with interviews of the passengers. The Philippine Coast Guard stated it would look into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Jacob H.

Reports state the 190 meter long, 57001 dwt bulk carrier Jacob H (IMO: 9452634) ran aground in the Gulf of Gabon while loading cargo near Libreville, Gabon. The bulk carrier was loading a cargo of 52,000 tons of manganese ore when struck bottom. The vessel requested assistance from a local private pilot which was able to refloat the vessel.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

News accounts stated the Jacob H left port on the night of November 6 failing to pay the pilot and following navigation rules requiring a vessel to be guided out of port by a pilot. Details of the incident are not clear as the Jacob H declared it had all the necessary paperwork to leave port.  There was some speculation that the master of the bulk carrier received an extremely costly bill for the refloating and that was the reason for the vessel to leave during the night.

 

Jade II

On the early morning of October 16, the 16 meter long fishing vessel Jade II (IMO: 8542767) became disabled in the English Channel some 10 kilometers off Barfleur, France. The Jade II had suffered engine failure while returning from fishing off Fécamp resulting in the trawler going adrift.  The Jade II requested assistance with French authorities dispatching the 18 meter long SNSM lifeboat Mona Rigolet (MMSI: 227005130) to assist. With winds reaching 50 km/h and waves reaching 2.5 meters, the lifeboat was able to overcome difficult conditions and establish a towline to the Jade II.  The vessels proceeded safely to Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
