Collision off Penghu

The 232 meter long, 43093 dwt freighter Taroko collided with the 997 ton freighter Te Hsing off Penghu Islands, Taiwan.  The Te Hsing was heading to Kinmen Island from Kaohsiung when it was struck by the Taroko during the night.  Of the 13 men on board the Te Hsing, two men were killed with another crewman and the master reported missing.  The condition of the Te Hsing was not reported.  No one on the Taroko was injured in the collision.   The Taroko was headed for Taichung, Taiwan from Hong Kong.   The cause of the collision is under investigation.

Collision in Azov Sea

The 114 meter long, 3595 dwt freighter Aleksa collided with the moored bunker tanker Poet V. Olefirenko in the Azov Sea port of Eisk, Russia.  The Aleksa was proceeding in the inner harbor when it struck the tanker resulting in minor damage on the Olefirenko.   No reported damage, injuries or pollution being released on the Aleksa.

Collision in Gulf of Finland

The 172 meter long, 25096 dwt freighter Amazon collided with the 23 meter long fishing vessel Florence in thick fog in the Gulf of Finland.  The Amazon left St. Petersburg, Russia bound for India when it struck the fishing vessel in zero visibility.   The crew of the Amazon didn’t realize they had struck the Florence, but had struck some small object floating in the water.   The Florence was severely damaged and sank in a few minutes.  The four crew on the Florence were able to board a life raft and were later rescued by a Finnish patrol boat.  The men suffered minor bruises.   No reports of injuries of the 24 crew on the Amazon.  Authorities questioned the crews of both vessels and are conducting an investigation into the incident.
