The 168 meter long container ship Charlotta collided with the 140 meter long, 11000 dwt container ship Hanse Confidence while docking at Hamburg, Germany. The Charlotta suffered a technical fault before it rammed the stem of the Hanse Confidence. The Hanse Confidence suffered extensive damage as the hull was punctured allowing water ingress into the generator and engine rooms. The Hanse Confidence began to heel and looked as the vessel was going to sink. However, the emergency services responded quickly. Pumps were placed on board while containers were unloaded from the deck. Both operations allowed the Hanse Confidence to sit higher in the water. When they completed, the hull damage was lifted 50 inches above the waterline. No reports of injuries. The Hanse Confidence was towed to Norderwerft Reiherstieg. The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.
Collision During Salvage
The 64 meter long tug Manhanuwara collided with the 102 meter long, 4900 dwt bulk freighter Thor Gitta near the grounded vessel Angel 1 off Mauritius. Both vessels have been chartered for the salvage of the Angel 1 which sits on the reefs off Poudres-d’Or, Mauritius. The collision resulted in only slight damage on the Thor Gitta. Reports state the Thor Gitta proceeded back to the Angel 1 where it is transferring 32,000 tons of rice cargo.
Collision at Beira
The 28,166 dwt bulk freighter Zuni Princess collided with the 30,086 dwt tanker Bow Engineer in the port of Beira, Mozambique. The two vessel sustained some damage. No further details reported.
