The 783 gt icebreaker Stettin collided with the 89 meter long, 3850 dwt freighter Richelieu in the northern lock of the Kiel Canal at Brunsbuettel. The Stettin was attempting to moor when it struck the stern of the Richelieu. The icebreaker suffered little to no damage while the freighter’s stern was dented. Both vessels were detained for a short period and allowed to continue their voyage. The Stettin was on route from Hamburg bound for Rendsburg. The Richelieu was bound for Kaliningrad from Hamburg. No reports of injury or pollution being released.
Captain on the Toilet
The 28 meter long passenger ship MS King went aground on the island of Lauttasaari in Helsinki, Finland. The MS King suffered no hull damage but was unable to free itself. The 54 passengers on board were evacuated to a sister ship. Later the same day the MS King was pulled free and towed to a berth at Salutorget. Initial reports state the master of the MS King was not on the bridge at the time of the incident. One report states the captain was trapped on the toliet and was unable to open the door. Authorities are conducting an investigation into the accident.
Collision at Houston
The 274 meter long tanker Naticina collided with a barge on the Houston Ship Channel. The towboat Alliance was towing the barge, loaded with 20,000 barrels of xylene, when the barge struck the tanker. The Naticina suffered damage to its hull with a breach to its stargobard ballast tank. No injuries or pollution released. Authorities are conducting an investigation and conducting surveys for damage.
