Collision off Hirtshals

The 172 dwt trawler HG 244 Perina collided with the wooden trawler Helle FN 64 off the Hirtshals, Denmark.   The Perina was heading into the sun which blinded the masters view when the struck the Helle on its starboard side.   The Helle suffered significant damage with broken planks and ribs.  One crewman also was slightly injured on the Helle.  The Helle was able to return to harbor at Hirtshals.   Reports state repairs on Helle may take several months.  The Perina suffered minor damage.

Collision off Skagen

The 3500 dwt freighter Frank W collided with the fishing vessel Lilly – E2 off Skagen, Denmark.  The Lilly’s crew of 2 contacted the rescue center stating the vessel was taking on water.  The center deployed two vessels with pumps.   The rough seas in the area slowed the rescue vessels.   Luckily, the pilot boat from Skagen happen to be in the area.   The pilot boat reached the Lilly and safely evacuated the Lilly crew.   The Lilly sank soon after.  The Frank W bound for Halmstad from Ijmuiden continued on to Halmsted to be inspected.   The Denmark Maritime Authority is investigating the incident.  No reports of injuries.   Details on pollution from the sunken Lilly has not been released.

Collision in Fog

The 396 ton passenger ferry Democracy No. 5 with 320 passengers and 16 crew collided with the 9.7 ton fishing vessel Haeseongho off Daecheong Island, South Korea.  The ferry had left Daecheong Island heading for Incheon in thick fog when it hit the fishing vessel.   The 3 crewmen on the Haeseongho were thrown overboard as the fishing vessel capsized after the collision.   All three men were pulled out of the water suffering minor injuries.   The ferry was able to continue on to Incheon.    No reports of injuries on the Democracy No. 5.   The South Korea Coast Guard will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
