Gavea 1 Allision

The 125 dwt passenger ferry Gavea 1 allided with a pier at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The ferry loaded with 907 passengers struck the pier twice while attempting to berth.  The Gavea 1 had 55 passengers injured and the vessel’s hull was damaged.  Many of the injured passengers were shaken and suffered bruises.  No reports of pollution being released.  Authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident.

Gudvangen Aground

The 50 meter long, 663 gt ferry Gudvangen went aground near Krakhellesundet, Norway.  The Gudvangen suffered damage to its bow section with a hole in the hull.   Three crewmen were injured of the four on board at the time. The ferry was able to refloat itself later the same day.  The Gudvangen was heading from Maloy with no passengers or cargo to Bergen for winter layup.   Authorities state alcohol was not a factor in the incident.   No pollution was released.

Grigoriy Bugrov Sinks

The 133 meter long, 6611 dwt tanker Grigoriy Bugrov sank on the Caspian Sea near Chechen Island, Russia located close to the entrance to the Volga-Caspian Sea Canal.  The tanker had collided with a submerged object damaging the hull near the engine room.   The Grigoriy Bugrov filled with water and sank in 8 meters of water listing 27 degrees to port.  All 14 crew were able to escape and there were no reported injuries.   The tanker had 6000 metric tons of heavy oil on board, but no reported pollution being released.   The Grigoriy Bugrov was built with a double hull preventing any oil from leaking out.  Salvage vessels and equipment have been dispatched to the scene.  The tanker is to be raised and towed to Astrakhan.   Reports state the object that was struck belonged to the Russian Navy.
