Havelland

Around noon on January 20, the 111 meter long, 6052 dwt cargo vessel Havelland (IMO: 9499735) went aground on the Kiel Canal near Rade, Germany. The Havelland had departed from Sundsvall and was headed for Kingston-upon-Hull when it suffered engine failure on the canal. Without power the cargo vessel ran aground on the southern bank of the canal. The Havelland was able to restart its main engine restoring power and refloating itself. Authorities dispatched the 28.5 meter long tug Parat (IMO: 812812) to assist and escort the cargo vessel to Rendsburg where it will undergo inspection for damage.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.

Hannah Luisa

On the afternoon of January 15, the 85 meter long self-propelled barge Hannah Luisa (MMSI: 211587970) allided with a bridge over the IJssel River near Zutphen, Netherlands. The barge was headed to Hengelo from Antwerp when it approached the bridge when it struck some piles near the quay. The vessel then proceeded under the bridge and struck the underside with its antenna. The Hannah Luisa only sustained minor damage when the antenna broke off. Authorities halted traffic over the bridge until engineers could inspect it for damage. Reports state the survey found no damage and traffic resumed a short time later.

No reports of injuries or pollution released. High water and strong currents were suggested as the cause of the incident. Video of the accident can be seen at dumpert.nl

Hermes

Hermes

On the evening of January 14, the 73 meter long self-propelled container barge Hermes (MMSI: 205490990) caught fire on the Ghent Ringvaart near Merelbeke, Belgium.  Reports state a boiler caught fire and released dense smoke. Local authorities and fire fighters were alerted and arrived on scene to find the blaze already extinguished. The fire fighters helped ventilate the vessel and stood down an hour later. No reports of injuries or pollution released.
