Kydonia

The 229 meter long, 92828 dwt bulk carrier Kydonia ran around on the Paraná River near San Nicolas, Argentina. The Kydonia departed from San Lorenzo with a partial cargo of soy beans when it ran aground. The bulk carrier was unable to free itself and requested assistance. Two tugs were dispatched and pulled free a few hours later. The Kydonia was towed upstream where it will be inspected. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. Reports state the Paraná River water level remains low making it difficult for vessels to navigate.

The 126 meter long, 4673 dwt ro-ro cargo vessel Kompozitor Rakhmaninov ran aground on the Volga River off Astrakhan, Russia. The Kompozitor Rakhmaninov was proceeding in ballast for Olya when it veered off and struck the left bank. Unfortunately, the cargo vessel had only partially passed under a railroad bridge leaving it stuck. Reports state tugs were dispatched to the scene to assist in refloating the vessel. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

Kerch Strait Explosion

Kandy

On January 21, the 98 meter long, 4811 dwt LPG tanker Maestro and the 65 meter long, 1038 dwt tanker Kandy caught fire in the Black Sea near the Kerch Strait. The two vessels were involved transferring fuel when there was a sudden explosion on deck.  Both the Maestro and Kandy were engulfed in flames killing some crew and others overboard. Black smoke spilled out alerting authorities.

Kandy

Authorities recovered 11 bodies from the sea. The Kandy had a crew of 17 and the Maestro had 14 crew.  Russian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. No further details reported.
