Kiel Canal Collision

The 134 meter long, 11390 dwt container ship OOCL Neva collided with the 90 meter long freighter Blue Carmel in the Kiel Canal between Breiholz and Oldenbüttel, Germany.  Reports state that both vessels sustained only slight damage.   The Blue Carmel has been detained in Brunsbuettel while the water police conduct further investigation into the incident.  The OOCL Neva continued on its voyage from Hamburg to St. Petersburg, Russia.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.

Knester

The 72 meter long, 2263 gt fishing vessel Knester went aground in the port of Sommarøy, Norway.  The Knester had just completed a trip in the Norwegian Sea with 1270 tons of herring on board when it attempted to enter the harbour and became stuck on a sand bar.  The fishing vessel emptied its ballast tanks and is awaiting the next high tide to refloat itself.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

KM Kirana IX Fire

The 119 meter long, 1309 dwt ferry KM Kirana IX caught fire while docked in Surabaya, Java, Indonesia.   The KM Kirana IX had over 500 passengers on board when a truck overheated and caught fire.   Passengers on board stampeded towards the exit gate while others jumped overboard into the water.  The crew did attempt to calm the passengers, but eight people perished in the panic and were trampled.   Reports state many passengers were taken to hospital.   Damage to the KM Kirana IX was limited to just the truck and small section of the vessel’s deck.   The crew was able to quickly extinguish the blaze before any serious damage occurred.   The KM Kirana IX was built in 1983 with the capacity of 850 passengers.   The ferry was scheduled to sail to Kalimantan, Borneo.
