On the afternoon of November 15, the Chinese fishing vessel Min Dong Yu 61227 caught fire in the Taiwan Strait approximately 28 nautical miles northwest of Taipei Harbor, Taiwan. The Min Dong Yu 61227 immediately sent out a distress call as the vessel with the Taiwan Coast Guard responding.  The Coast Guard rushed a vessel to the scene which had to deal with poor visibility and rough conditions. Even with waves of 3 meters and wind gusts of force 9, the Coast Guard would reached the fishing vessel.  Rescuers would safely transfer all 15 crew off the Min Dong Yu 61227 to a nearby fishing vessel Minxia Yu 01459 before they extinguish the blaze. No reports of injuries.

The Min Dong Yu 61227 was later taken under tow by the fishing vessel Minxiayu 01467 and headed back to port on the mainland. As soon as the fishing vessels crossed the median line , the Taiwan Coast Guard stood down.  The cause of the fire and the extent of damage to the Min Dong Yu 61227 was not disclosed.

On the afternoon of November 11, authorities from Lam Dong reported that 5 fishing vessels were wrecked along the coast of Vietnam in the South China Sea. Reports state the vessels encountered large waves and strong winds.   The fishing vessel BTh 81652 TS sunk while at anchor. The fishing vessel BTh 80347 TS broke free of its anchor and was blown ashore where its hull broke up. The fishing vessel BTh 80316 TS foundered in the waves while the fishing vessel BTh 82176 TS sank while trying to reach safety of the fishing port. Two additional vessels were reported sunk while at anchor off Ba Dang.  Authorities assisted with machinery to pull one of the fishing vessels ashore. No reports of injuries.

MSC Kyparissia

On the afternoon of November 7, the 255 meter long, 68129 dwt container ship MSC Kyparissia (IMO: 9618599) caught fire in the Johor Strait while berth at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia. Reports state the fire started in the under-hatch section of Block 5 while the crew were unloading containers. One crew member was killed and another 3 sustained injuries.  Another 2 dock workers were also killed from the fire. The injured crew were taken to hospital for treatment.

The local fire brigade deployed nine firefighters, one firetruck, a multi-purpose vehicle, and two tugs to combat the blaze.  Reports state the blaze was later brought under control, but fire fighters remain on site in case of reignition. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The extent of damage to the MSC Kyparissia has not been disclosed.
