On the afternoon of October 16, the 28 meter long fishing vessel Noruego (IMO: 8649486) caught fire in the South Atlantic off Angola. The fire started at the stern of the trawler and quickly spread through the superstructure. The four crew were unable to extinguish the blaze as flames reached meters high and smoke could be seen from miles away. Many local vessels came to the aid of the Noruego, but they were unable to extinguish the fire.  Reports state the 4 crew were rescued. One crew member suffered burns and a broken leg during the incident.

Reports state the Noruego burned to the the waters edge. The Noruego was built in 2003 in Norway. The vessel had been recently converted from fishing swordfish to octopus.

NS Sea Dagger

On the evening of September 29, the 17 meter long former pilot boat NS Sea Dagger (MMSI: 257367500) sank in the North Sea 70 miles west of the island of Sylt, Germany. Reports state the vessel had run into trouble causing the vessel to sink near an offshore wind farm.  The 2 crew members on the NS Sea Dagger sent out a distress call with a nearby vessel able to rescue them before the vessel sank. Authorities state several containers holding fuel had fallen overboard into the sea. A tug was dispatched to recover the fuel containers.  No reports of injuries. The cause of sinking was not disclosed.

Niki

On the morning of September 11, the 41 meter long, 393 dwt cargo vessel Niki (IMO: 9100968) ran aground on the Mediterranean Sea off Porticello, Sicily. The Niki had departed from Porticello bound for Ténès with a cargo of sea bream when it ran up on the Formica rocks. The cargo vessel sustained hull damage with a 1 meter gash resulting in water ingress, but there were no reports of injuries to the 8 crew on board.

Authorities deployed patrol vessels to the scene. A response team brought dewatering pumps to control the flooding. Divers were able to complete temporary repairs and plug the leaks and refloated the vessel. Reports state the Niki was escorted back to port. The Italian Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.
