Demiku on fire in the Seychelles

The 79 meter long, 3450 dwt fishing vessel Demiku caught fire while docked at Victoria, Seychelles. The vessel had arrived in port to repair its nets when a fire broke out on the main deck.  The blaze quickly spread to the wheelhouse.  The local fire brigade was requested and were able to extinguish the fire a short time later. One crewman of the 32 on board suffered smoke inhalation and taken to hospital. Damage to the vessel was significant.  Reports state the Demiku’s cargo of 350 tons of tuna will be unloaded.  Officials have launched an investigation into the incident.

Britannia

The 110 meter long passenger ship Britannia suffered water ingress on the Ijssel while berthed near Zutphen, Netherlands.  The Britannia was en route to Cologne from Deventer with 154 passengers when a leak was discovered in the stern portion of the vessel.   The local fire brigade was requested as the vessel was unable to control the water ingress.  Passengers and crew were evacuated to a nearby hotels  No reports of injuries.  Some 80 men including local fire and police, arrived on scene with multiple dewatering pumps.  Several hours later, the pumps were able to bring the flooding under control. Booms were placed around the vessel to contain any pollution released.

Reports state the vessel’s hull had cracked which was around one meter wide.  The passenger ship may have struck bottom as the water level at Zutphen was low or the vessel struck something floating in the water.  Divers were requested to examine the vessel and placed a temporary wooden patch on the hull.  The Britannia will be towed to a shipyard for repairs and allow for further investigation by authorities.

Huckleberry Finn

The 176 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Huckleberry Finn allided with ramp at Rostock, Germany.  The ferry was departing the dock at Rostock en route to Trelleborg when high winds caused the vessel to strike the roro ramp.  The Huckleberry Finn suffered a seven meter long gash into the hull above the waterline.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The ferry returned to the dock and was detained by authorities.  Reports state damage was over 50000 €.
