Congo Ferry Accidents
A ferry overloaded with some 300 people capsized on the Kasai river near the village of Mbendayi. This remote village is located near the border between Angola and Democratic Republic of Congo. The ferry‘s engine caught fire which lead to the vessel to capsize. Reports state that some 200 have drowned with only 15 survivors. Another report had local fishermen refusing to help passengers in the water, but instead looting the cargo on the burning vessel. It also states that fishermen were beating people with oars.
Another ferry capsized in the northwest Equateur Province, Congo. The vessel struck a rock and capsized. Of the 100 estimated onboard, only 15 people survived.
