Salmo Hits Quay

Salmo Hits Quay

The 92 meter long, 3225 dwt freighter Salmo struck the quay while trying to berth at Brake, Germany.   The Salmo’s hull was a small gash which allowed oil to leak out.    The crew was able to recover most of the oil, but 100 liters were released into the lower Weser River.   The Quay suffered some damage to several pilings.    The master was fined 1000 euros and the vessel has been detained in port during the investigation.   No reports of injuries.

The 60 foot tour boat Picture Rocks with 61 passengers became disabled while sailing near Empire, Michigan.   A wave struck the tour boat smashing a window and shorting out the electronics.   The vessel contacted the Coast Guard who dispatched a helicopter to the scene.  With their assistance, the vessel was beached and passengers waded ashore.   Two passengers had to be airlifted to safety after sustaining a shoulder injury.     No reports of pollution.   At the time of the incident, there were waves 2 to 4 feet in height.
