West Wind

The 46 foot long fishing vessel West Wind sank off Crescent City, California.   The West Wind were fishing crab when the crew noticed the vessel was riding lower in the water.  Upon inspection, they found the boat was taking on water.   The crew sent out a distress call to the Coast Guard.   The message was garbled, but the Coast Guard was able to calculate the approximate location and dispatched a helicopter and motor lifeboat to the scene.   The helicopter reached the scene and found the crew of three in a raft with two of them in their survival suits.  The helicopter was able to winch up all three men and safely return to Crescent City.   The one crewman who was not in a survival suit suffered from hypothermia.   There was some debris from the sunken vessel, but no signs of a fuel spill.

Manistee

Manistee

The 678 foot long, 14350 dwt freighter Manistee became stuck in ice while proceeding in the Straits of Mackinac near the Mackinac Bridge.   The vessel contacted the Coast Guard who dispatched the cutter Biscayne Bay to the scene.  The cutter freed the Manistee and escorted the bulk carrier into Lake Huron.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.  The Coast Guard conducts ice-breaking on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan as part of Operation Taconite.   The Manistee proceeded safely on to its destination at Toledo, Ohio.

Tennessee Rocket Ship

The 95 meter long, 3950 dwt ro-ro cargo vessel MV Delta Mariner struck the Eggner Ferry Bridge over the Kentucky Lake, a section of the Tennessee River.   The Delta Mariner, loaded with booster cores used with Delta and Atlas rockets, attempted to pass under the bridge through a channel normally used by recreational vessels.  The bridge partially collapsed sending 20 feet of the span onto the vessel and into the water.  The bridge also suffered damage to its superstructure.  The Delta Mariner did not suffer any severe damage.  No one was injured during the incident.  The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

The MV Delta Mariner typically loads booster cores at a Boeing plant in Decatur, Alabama and proceeds down the Tennessee River and Ohio River, then onto the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.
