Chevelle

Chevelle

The 72 foot long fishing vessel Chevelle went aground against the jetty at Newport, Oregon.   The fishing vessel caught a strong gust of wind and blown onto the jetty.  The vessel’s crab pots shifted and Chevelle developed a severe list allowing water ingress into the engine room.  The Coast Guard responded to the scene with a lifeboat and helicopter.   The helicopter lifted the four crew safely back to shore.  No reports of injuries.  The crew plans to salvage the vessel.

Gelso M

Gelso M

The 147 meter long, 17999 dwt tanker Gelso M went ashore at Pointe Santa Panagia, Sicily near Syracuse.  The Gelso M  became disabled while route to Augusta.   The vessel became unmanagable in severe conditions with gusts up to 80 miles an hour.   The waves and wins drove the tanker on the rocks a few meters from the shore.   One report states the vessel lost control when the engine room became flooded.  The crew sent out a distress call to the Italian Coast Guard as conditions prevented the crew abandoning ship.  The Coast Guard dispatched two helicopters which were able to safely rescue all 19 crew on board.   No reports of injuries.  The Gelso M has developed a list to port after shifting on the rocks.   The tanker was in ballast reducing the amount of pollution being released.   An early investigation shows the vessel may have nagivated a route to close to shore for the weather conditions

Lady Cecelia

The 62 foot long fishing vessel Lady Cecelia went missing off the Washington coast near Leadbetter Point, Willapa Bay.   The fishing vessel had encountered bad weather with 12-foot seas and wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour.  A distress radio beacon (EPIRB) signal from the Lady Cecelia was received by the Coast Guard.  The Coast Guard initially dispatched helicopters and multiple 47 foot lifeboats to search for survivors.   A debris field was found near Willapa Bay with an oil slick, crab pots and an empty lifeboat, but no signs of the four crewmen.  The Coast Guard added additional helicopters and  a C-130 search plane to aid the search effort.  The cutter Cuttyhunk was launched but was recalled when the search effort was suspended the next day.   The Coast Guard called off the search after covering some 1,300 square miles.
