Denera

Denera

The 105 meter long self-propelled barge Denera became disabled on the Main River at the locks in Gustavsburg, Germany.  The vessel’s propeller became fouled after striking an obstruction causing the vessel to veer into the lock gate.   The gate and the vessel suffered damage in the allision.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.   Reports state the damage was around 1000€.

Antarctic Fire

The 51 meter long fishing vessel Jung Woo 2  caught fire in the Ross Sea off Antarctica.   The fire started in the vessel’s crew quarters and spread to other portions of the vessel.  The crew issued a distress call which was received by the fishing vessel Hong Jin 707.   The Hong Jin 707 evacuated the crew who were forced into a lifeboat as the fire burned out of control.   The Hong Jin 707 proceeded on to meet with the research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer which has medical facilities on board.  Of the 40 crew on board the Jung Woo 2, three crew men died in the fire with another seven suffered burn injuries.   The vessel remains on fire and was last reported to be sinking.

Silver Lady

The 56 foot long fishing vessel Silver Lady suffered an explosion while berthed at Port Townsend, Washington.   The vessel was recharging its batteries when it exploded.  The explosion damaged machinery on board, but the hull remained intact.  The Coast Guard responded quickly as the Cutter Osprey was docked nearby.   The explosion may have resulted by acetylene tanks and oxygen tanks stored near the batteries.   No reports of injuries.   The Coast Guard is conducting an investigation into the incident.
