Collision on Ghent-Terneuzen

The 84 meter long self-propelled barge Zandkreek collided with the 110 meter long self-propelled barge Ben-Gus on the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal off Terneuzen, Netherlands. The two vessels struck head-on and sustained significant damage. The Ben-Gus had damage to its fuel tank releases fuel oil.  Authorities responded and placed booms around the vessel to contain any pollution released. The Zandkreek was allowed to continue on its voyage to Antwerp. Reports state both vessels will proceed to a shipyard for repairs.  Authorities stated there was a lack of communication between the two barges which lead to the collision. No reports of injuries.

The 114 meter long general cargo vessel Aleksey Afanasyev ran aground on the Don River near Azov, Russia. The Aleksey Afanasyev was en route to Venice from Rostov with 2888 tons of oil cakes when it grounded. The vessel was later refloated a few hours later with the assistance of an icebreaker. The Aleksey Afanasyev proceeded to Azov to be inspected for damage. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The 199 meter long bulk carrier Redhead became disabled in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off Port Cartier, Quebec, Canada. The Redhead had departed from Belledune and had suffered an engine problems and went adrift. No further details reported. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
