The 112 meter long, 6334 dwt cargo vessel Emsmoon allided with the bridge over the Ems river at Weener, Germany. The Emsmoon had departed from Papenburg when it struck 335 meter long bascule railway bridge.  The bow of the Emsmoon struck the closed center span and almost completely destroyed the span. The Emsmoon sustained dents and scratches, but there was no injuries or pollution released.  The Emsmoon returned to Papenburg for inspection. Authorities reported that the cause of the allision was not due to a technical fault.

A floating crane will be used to remove the destroyed span. Traffic will be limited to self-propelled barges until the span can be removed. Cargo vessels upstream of the bridge will be unable leave as well. Reports state repairing the bridge may take years to complete.

On November 30, the 45 meter long fishing vessel Stefnir collided with an iceberg near Dýrafirði, Iceland. The trawler was in shallow water when it struck the iceberg head-on. The Stefnir suffered dents above the water and parts of the iceberg fell onto the vessel’s desk. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The Stefnir returned to Ísafjarðar to be inspected.

On November 30, the 42 meter long, 179 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Norcon Galatea ran aground near Pilley’s Island, Newfoundland, Canada.  The ferry was en route to Little Bay Islands with six passengers and five vehicles when it ran into issues and went aground. The ferry was able to refloat itself and returned to Pilley’s Island.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. A few days later reports stated the vessel was allowed to continue its normal operations.
