Nordic Odyssey

On October 2, the 225 meter long, 75603 dwt bulk carrier Nordic Odyssey ran aground off Liepaja, Latvia. The Nordic Odyssey had departed from Liepaja with a partial cargo of grain when it grounded just outside the harbor. The next day the bulk carrier was refloated and proceeded to a nearby anchorage to be inspected for damage. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The 73 meter long, 2858 dwt cargo vessel Mehmet Akin allided with a pier at Kocaeli Liman, Turkey. The Mehmet Akin, loaded with cement, was attempting to berth when it struck the pier. No reports of injuries. The cargo vessel sustained damage with a small hole above the waterline.  No pollution reported.

The passenger ship Stellar Sea ran aground near Tofino, British Columbia, Canada. The small passenger vessel was on a bear-watching tour when it ran aground in shallow waters.  Unable to free itself, the Stellar Sea remained lodged on top of a rock and sustained hull damage. Reports state there was no pollution was released and no  injuries to the 26 passengers. All the passengers were safely returned to Tofino. The Canadian Coast Guard reports a boom has been placed around the vessel to contain any potential pollution released. Owners have hired a salvage firm to recover the vessel.

The owner of the Stellar Sea also owned the Leviathan II which sank in 2015 killing six people. Reports state the Canada Transportation Board does not plan to investigate the incident.
