Jo Kiri

The 145 meter long, 19508 dwt chemical tanker Jo Kiri caught fire near Eagle Point while in the Houston Ship Canal. The crew spotted smoke coming from the engine room.  The blaze quickly engulfed the compartment disabling the engines.  The crew requested assistance as the tanker blocked traffic on the canal. The Coast Guard responded and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze after an hour. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The Jo Kiri was later towed to a nearby terminal for inspection and survey for damage.

The 88 meter long, 2800 dwt cargo vessel Daan allided with the lock gate while exiting the Kiel Canal at Brunsbüttel, Germany. The Daan was proceeding through the lock when it suffered engine failure and could not reverse before it struck the lock gate. The Daan sustained bow damage with the bulwark partially torn off while the lock gate was left deformed. No reports of pollution released. The Daan was reported moored at Brunsbüttel.  On December 3, the Daan lost a crewman while en route to St. Malo from Szczecin. The vessel had a hatch strike a crewman standing on deck who later died from the injury.

The 118 meter long container ship Hanni ran aground on the Elbe near Mühlenberger Hole, Germany. The Hanni departed Hamburg for Bremerhaven and was heading to the North Sea when it suffered engine failure while between Blankenese and Finkenwerder.  The Hanni drifted before running aground near the south shore.

A tug was dispatched and was unable to refloat the boxship.  A second attempt failed to free the Hanni even with an additional tug and the rising tide.  The Hanni was finally freed 12 hours later with four tugs. The Hanni proceeded to Hamburg. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
