The 230 meter long, 14424 dwt ro-ro cargo vessel Begonia Seaways ran aground on the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal near Terneuzen, Netherlands. The vessel was en route to Ghent when it suffered a mechanical fault and struct the canal embankment. The vessel requested assistance with authorities stopping traffic on the canal and dispatching several tugs to the scene. The tugs were able to refloat the Begonia Seaways and escorted the cargo vessel to a nearby quay later the same day.  No reports of injuries.  No further details reported to the extent of damage or if any pollution was released in the incident.

On September 8, the 25 meter long passenger ship Jewel caught fire on the East River near Governors Island, New York. While on a cruise with 90 passengers and 4 crew, a fire started in the vessel’s engine room.  The crew alerted authorities who dispatched several rescue vessels to the scene. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the vessel and transported to lower Manhattan.  No reports of injuries. Reports state the fire was later extinguished and the vessel was taken under tow back to port. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 111 meter long, 10959 dwt cargo vessel Hai Duong 09 capsized while in port at Visakhapatnam, India. The Hai Duong 09 had emptied its ballast tanks and dock workers had begun the loading a cargo of iron billets.  After some 1200 metric tons of cargo had been loaded, the cargo shifted to starboard and developed a heavy list. The vessel struck the quay and partially capsized at the berth. Six of the 26 dock workers on board were injured during the incident. Reports state the cargo had been improperly loaded and not secured which resulted in the capsizing. Port authorities have stated that the cargo will be removed and the Hai Duong 09 will be righted. No details on damage to the quay or vessel and if any pollution was released in the incident.
