On May 22, the 118 meter long, 6850 dwt container ship Elisabeth caught fire on the Kiel Canal near Brunsbüttel, Germany. The Elisabeth was proceeding to Hamburg from Settin when a fire broke out in the vessel’s stack. Soot had accumulated and had ignited inside the funnel. The crew quickly responded and was able to contain the blaze until the local fire brigade arrived. The fire brigade was able to to extinguish the blaze. Reports state there was just minor damage to the stack. After an inspection, the Elisabeth was allowed to proceed on its voyage an hour later. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

On May 16, the 37 meter long passenger vessel Maui Princess (MMSI: 367331770) ran aground off the west coast of Maui near Lahaina, Hawaii. The Maui Princess had broken free from its mooring and went adrift before it went hard aground on a bar some 300 feet offshore. No reports of injuries.

Authorities dispatched a response team to the scene. They found the passenger vessel had not released any pollution, but still posed a high risk. A contractor was hired and begun removal of 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel off the vessel.

On May 16, the 200 meter long 24000 gt container ship CMA CGM Mermaid (IMO: 9961283) allided while on the Kiel Canal at Brunsbüttel, Germany. The CMA CGM Mermaid was entering the northern lock aided by two tugs when it struck the masonry of the lock. The CMA CGM Mermaid sustained a two meter long  dent along its hull and the lock wall sustained an estimate of over 15000 euros in damage.  An investigation found the master made a steering error along with a strong wind were the driving cause of the allision. The CMA CGM Mermaid was allowed to proceed on its voyage. No reports of injuries or pollution released.
