On December 30, 2024 the 170 foot long, 199 gt cargo vessel Jerlyn Khatness (IMO: 8870580) sank in the San Bernardino Strait off Lavezares, Philippines. The Jerlyn Khatness was en route to San Jose from Naga City with a cargo of 24 tons of cement and 15 crew when it suffered water ingress from rough waves. The cargo vessel started to sink after being struck by large waves off Lavezares.  Reports state the Jerlyn Khatness later sank with 13 crew rescued. Passing vessels and local fishermen rescued 12 crew and one crew would swim to San Juan Island after 25 hours in the water.

The Philippine Coast Guard along with local authorities have launched a search and rescue for the missing crew.  One crew member perished and the body was recovered off the island of Biri. The incident is under investigation.

On the afternoon of December 31, 2024, the two-masted 34 meter long, 396 gt passenger ketch sailing vessel Ocean Pure 1 (MMSI: 525401533) caught fire in the Halmahera Sea while anchored off Waigeo Island, Indonesia. The fire started by an electrical short behind the dryer in the laundry room. The crew attempted to extinguish the blaze, but the fire had become uncontrollable.  The vessel sent out a distress call and all the 18 crew and 10 passengers on board abandoned ship into the vessel’s lifeboats. The crew and passengers safely landed on the shore of Yefinat Island.  One crew had sustained severe burns from the fire and was later evacuated by authorities to a hospital in Waisai.

The fire completely consumed the Ocean Pure 1 as it burned to the waterline. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Just after midnight on January 2, the 88 meter long, 3785 dwt cargo vessel Madicken (IMO: 9195755) allided with the lock gate on the Kiel Canal at Brunsbüttel, Germany. The Madicken was proceeding from Hamburg to Klaipeda when it suffered engine failure at the entrance to the north lock. The vessel attempted to drop anchor as part of emergency measures, but the Madicken still struck the lock gate. The lock gate was sustained a 9 meter wide dent with parts stoved-in a full 2 meters. Reports state the lock chamber floor may also be damaged from the vessel’s anchor. There were no injuries.

The Madicken only sustained minor damage and proceeded out of the lock and moored nearby.  Authorities detained the cargo vessel until it could be inspected further.  Traffic through the north lock was halted as could no longer be used and will be out of service for some considerable time. The incident is under investigation.
