On the morning of October 15, the 80 meter long self-propelled barge Labe 15 (MMSI: 270314000) sprung a leak on the Wesser River at the lock in Dörverden, Germany.  The Labe 15 alerted authorities that the vessel had suffered water ingress in the vessel’s engine room.  The local fire brigade was alerted which dispatched a pollution response vessel to the scene. The fire brigade used a pump on this vessel to dewater the Labe 15. Reports state the oil polluted water was stored in special containers to prevent pollution reaching the river. Divers were deployed to locate the leak and make temporary repairs. No reports of injuries. Authorities state that traffic resumed on the Weser later that afternoon.

On the afternoon of October 13, a fishing vessel (name not disclosed) caught fire in the Taiwan Strait off Jibei Island, Penghu County, Taiwan.  Authorities state the fire broke out on an abandoned fishing vessel along the shore. The local fire department arrived on site and found flames shooting into the air.  After an hour, the fire fighters were able to extinguish the blaze, but the fishing vessel was heavily gutted by the fire.

An investigation into the incident has been launched. Authorities were uncertain as the fishing vessel’s registration was unknown. Investigators have stated the fire may have been started by arson.  There were no one onboard at the time of the incident.

On the afternoon of October 17, the 35 meter long sightseeing sternwheeler passenger ship Sir Winston (MMSI: 368333930) allided on the East River near Williamsburg Bridge in New York.  The Sir Winston was attempting to berth at a pier when it lost propulsion when an air valve broke and the vessel went adrift.

The Sir Winston drifted towards a private dock and asked for assistance, but the people on the dock refused to assist the sternwheeler. The vessel continue to drift down the river when it struck a railway barrier near the bridge. Authorities received a distress call with the New York Fire Department along with the United States Coast Guard responding.  The 75 meter long tugboat Henry Girls (MMSI: 368327980) was dispatched to assist. The tug towed the sternwheeler to Pier 36 safely. There were no injuries to the 50 passengers and 5 crew on board the Sir Winston.  Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
