On the morning of December 19, the 100 meter long, 6251 dwt cargo vessel Cellus (IMO: 9173317) ran aground in the River Wear at the entrance to the Port of Sunderland, England. The Cellus had departed from Brünsbuttel with a cargo of paper products when it grounded as it entered the port. The cargo vessel was unable to free itself and requested assistance. Tugboats were dispatched from the Tees and Tyne to free the Cellus as it was blocking the port entrance. The tugs arrived on site and were able to pull the cargo vessel free. The Cellus was later docked at a quay within the port. No reports of injuries or pollution released. No details if the Cellus sustained any hull damage or was inspected for damage.

On the afternoon of December 19, a 7.9 fishing vessel (name not disclosed) capsized in the Yellow Sea 13 kilometers north of Seonmido Island, Deokjeok-myeon, South Korea. Reports state the vessel had 5 crew members on board when it rolled over.  Four of the 5 crew were rescued by a nearby vessel with one sustaining a head injury. The South Korean Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter which airlifted the injured crew member back to shore for medical treatment.

The Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation for the missing crew member. Deploying several patrol boats, a hovercraft and aircraft to search the areas around were the fishing vessel had capsized. The cause of the capsizing was not disclosed.

On the afternoon of December 17, the 163 meter long, 10554 dwt livestock carrier Zein 1 (IMO: 7622041) caught fire in the Sea of Marmara while berthed at the Kuzeystar Shipyard, Turkey. The Zein 1 was undergoing maintenance when a fire broke out on the vessel. The Tuzla port authority and local fire fighters were able to respond and quickly extinguish the blaze. There were no reports of injuries and no pollution was released. The extent of damage caused by the fire was not disclosed.
