On the afternoon of December 27, an 20 ton fishing vessel (name not disclosed) became disabled in the Sea of Japan about 48 nautical miles northeast of Ulleungdo Island, South Korea. The fishing vessel had suffered engine failure and went adrift. The vessel requested assistance with the South Korean Coast Guard immediately dispatching a patrol vessel to the scene. The patrol vessel would reach the fishing vessel, but bad weather conditions prohibited towing.  The patrol vessel stood by the fishing vessel until the next morning when towing could be started. The vessels proceeded 96 kilometers to the safety of Sadong Port, Ulleungdo.

There were no reports of injuries to the 8 crew on board the fishing vessel. The Coast Guard conducted breathalyzer tests and inspected the fishing vessel’s equipment. No further details reported.

 

Atlantic Cruise

On the morning of December 27, the 30 meter long (approx length) passenger ship Atlantic Cruise caught fire in the Bay of Bengal at Nuniachhara, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The fire started in the  engine room as the Atlantic Cruise was attempting to dock at the jetty to take on passengers for a voyage to Saint Martin.  The fire quickly spread though the vessel with parts of the superstructure gutted. The local fire brigade assisted by the Bangladesh Navy attempted to extinguish the blaze. Reports stated even after several hours, the fire had not been contained.

There were no tourists on board during the incident. Approximately 200 tourists were waiting to board the vessel before the fire started.  Unfortunately, a crew member was found dead.  Reports state the crew member had been asleep in a cabin when the fire broke out and was unable to escape the flames.

Authorities have stated the incident under investigation.

On the night of December 21, a 59 ton fishing vessel (name not disclosed) became disabled in the Sea of Japan off the port of Imwon, South Korea. The fishing vessel with 2 crew members on board had suffered engine failure and gone adrift. The South Korea Coast Guard dispatched 2 patrol vessels along with a coastal rescue vessel from Imwon to assist.  The vessels arrived on scene and took the fishing vessel under tow. The vessels proceeded back to Imwon safely. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
