Adriatic Sea Collision

The 90 meter long, 4496 dwt freighter Joerg N collided with the fishing vessel Golub near Pula, Croatia on the Adriatic Sea.  The Golub quickly sank after the collision.  The eight crewmen were able to get into the lifeboats.  The Joerg N continued on its voyage and didn’t aid in the rescue.   The crew of the Golub was able to reach shore an hour later with all men reported safe.  Authorities contacted the Joerg N and requested it to proceed to Rijeka where it will be inspected.   An investigation into the incident is being conducted.

Alaskan Leader

October 27, 2011 | Fire

The 150 foot long fishing-processing vessel Alaskan Leader suffered an engine room fire near the Unimak Pass in the Bering Sea.  The Alaskan Leader was heading back to harbor after a six-week fishing trip with 9,000 pounds of frozen cod when a fire broke out in the electrical system.   The fire spread through the vessel and the vessel soon lost lights and power.  The master quickly alerted the Coast Guard of the situation while   the 23 crew on board attempted to extinguish the fire.   For several hours the crew fought the blaze until the master of the vessel order the men to prepare to abandon ship.  Three other fishing vessels who heard the distress call from the Alaskan Leader reached the scene.  They were able to provide enough light to allow the Alaskan Leader crew to finally extinguish the blaze.  The Coast Guard cutter arrived on the scene and the Alaskan Leader was able to get its engine restarted.  A tug arrived later to tow the Alaskan Leader back to Dutch Harbor.  No reports of injuries.   The Coast Guard will investigate the incident.

Arcturus

October 21, 2011 | Disabled

The 12 meter long trawler Arcturus became disabled near the entrance to the harbour of Eyemouth, Scotland.  The trawler’s engine failed and the master contacted Forth Coastguard.  The RNLI lifeboat from Eyemouth responded and took the Arcturus under tow into the harbour.  None of the three crew on board were injured.  The Arcturus was returning from a fishing trip before the engine failed.  No reports of damage or pollution being released.
