A Bad Day For Fishing

The 50-foot fishing vessel Edvin Olai reported engine failure while off Røst, Norway.   While the Edvin Olai was waiting on a tow from a rescue ship, the crew was concern the vessel would strike the reef only a few yards away.  Their attention quickly change direction as they saw smoke coming from the air vents to the engine room.   The crew closed the hatches and released the extinguish system, but they still heard a crackling noise from the engine room.  The crew feared there might be an explosion was evacuated by helicopter.   The helicopter landed the men in Røst while the Edvin Olai arrived later under tow of the rescue boat Stombull.   Local fire rescue went aboard and to make sure the fire was extinguished.  The vessel will be towed back to it’s home port of Meloy.

Arklow Resolve Aground

The 4530 dwt freighter Arklow Resolve went aground near Vordingborg, Denmark.   A tug was requested as the Arklow Resolve was not able to refloat itself.   The Arklow Resolve was heading to Spain with a cargo of grain before it went aground.  Reports state there was no pollution released.

Alpsray Explosion

The 1125 ts inland tanker Alpsray exploded while berthed at the BP refinery at Lingen, Germany.   The Alpsray was being loaded with premium fuel when a fire broke out.   The fire quickly enveloped the Alpsray and there were several explosions.    The five crew members on board the Alpsray were safely rescued.   One crewman had to be treated for minor injuries.    Local firefighters were able to get the fire under control using an extinguishing foam.     Reports state traffic on the Dortmund-Ems Canal had to be stopped due to this incident.   Initial estimates state the damage will be in the millions.   Pollution has been released.   The cause of the explosion is not known, but negligent arson is suspected.
