CMA CGM Libra Aground

The 131,000 dwt boxship CMA CGM Libra went aground at the port of Xiamen, China.   The 363 meter long vessel grounding was severe  resulting with more than 10 degree list at high tide.    The company has started salvage plans.  No injuries or pollution has been released.

Update: May 27th, the CMA CGM Libra was successfully refloated.  Initial reports state the vessel did not suffer any hull damage and is proceeding to Hong Kong.

Cruiseship Strikes Ice

The Holland America cruise ship Westerdam struck ice while in Yakutat Bay, Alaksa.    The Westerdam was maneuvering in high winds through ice  near the Hubbard Glacier when it struck a “berg” that dented the hull 15 feet below the waterline.   However, the cruise ship’s hull was not punctured and no reports of  water ingress.  The Westerdam was able to continue to Sitka and will proceed to Ketchikan to undergo an underwater inspection.   The company reported that the damage was not significant enough to prevent the Westerdam to continue its schedule for the rest of the season.  The repairs will be made when the vessel’s next dry dock.    No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The Coast Guard is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Captain Andre Sinks

The 77 foot fishing vessel Captain Andre sank in early morning hours while fishing in Terrebonne Bay near Dulac, Louisiana.   The crew contacted Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s office that they were in need of assistance.   The Coast Guard station in Grand Isle responded by sending out a helicopter to the Captain Andre.   The helicopter hoisted the 4 crewmen off the vessel and brought them back safely to Belle Chasse.  The cause of the vessel sinking has not been reported.  No report of injuries.   The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.
