The 83 meter long, 2345 dwt freighter Edro III went ashore at Peyia, Cyprus. The Edro III left Limassol with a cargo of plasterboard bound for Rhodes in bad weather. The strong winds and rough seas caused the vessel to drift off course when it struck a rock and became disabled. The Edro III drifted until it finally went ashore. No reports of injuries to the crew of 11. Authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene which rescued nine crewmen. The captain and chief engineer decided to remain on board the vessel. No further details reported.
Elite Disabled
The 149 meter long, 11243 dwt container ship Elite became disabled in the Bay of Biscay after the vessel suffered a major engine breakdown. Attempts by the crew to repair the engine failed and a tug was requested to take the Elite under tow to a French port to undergo repairs. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.
Elbtank Italy Strikes Pilings
The 183 meter long, 37106 dwt tanker Elbtank Italy became disabled on the Kiel Canal near Fischerhutte, Germany. The tanker had suffered rudder failure and allied into the pilings along the southern bank sinking three and damaging another four. The Elbtank Italy proceeded to Kiel where it awaits inspection. The tanker was scheduled to sail from Rotterdam to St. Petersburg, Russia. No reports of injuries or pollution being released.
