On the afternoon of June 8, the 246 meter long, 31204 dwt self-unloading bulk carrier Hon. James L. Oberstar (IMO: 5322518) ran aground on the St. Marys River in the East Neebish Channel off Neebish Island, Michigan. The Hon. James L. Oberstar was proceeding with limestone when it reported striking the bottom.  The bulk carrier sustained some hull damage, but there were no injuries or pollution released.

The Hon. James L. Oberstar was allowed to procced to a nearby anchorage. The Coast Guard dispatched vessels to the site and deployed pollution containment equipment around the stern of the bulk carrier.  On June 11, the 234 meter long bulk carrier Kaye E. Barker (IMO: 5097450) arrived on site to allow transfer of the limestone cargo. After the transfer is completed, the Hon. James L. Oberstar will proceed for repairs.

On June 11, the 62 meter long, 1065 dwt cargo vessel Hein (IMO: 6702284) ran aground in the Gulf of Paria off the Chaguaramas Peninsula on Monas Island, Trinidad and Tobago. The Hein was headed to St Vincent and Grenadines with a cargo of bricks when it suffered a cargo shift and developed a heavy list to port. The vessel changed course and was intentionally driven aground  before it capsized.  No reports of injuries.

Authorities report the Hein partially sank along the portside stern. Oil pollution was spotted around the cargo vessel caused by the bilge. Island authorities have stated efforts are being made to stabilize and refloat the cargo vessel. A local advocacy group has asked urgent action taken to avoid damage to the marine life.

Hunts Point

On the morning of May 24, the 88 meter long, 5000 dwt waste disposal barge Hunts Point (IMO: 9648049) exploded while berthed on the Hudson River near the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant, New York, New York. Several workers were engaged on the barge when a sparks ignited gas resulting an explosion. One worker was killed from the explosion after being knocked unconscious and thrown into the river.  Two other workers sustained injuries from the blast with one taken to hospital for treatment.

Reports state the vessel was loaded with raw sewage at the time of the incident. After the explosion, the deck of the Hunts Point was covered in sewage. New York Fire fighters along with other first responders had to undergo decontamination from exposure.

The New York Police and Fire Departments have launched an investigation into the incident. No details disclosed on the environmental impact caused by the incident.
