Heinrich Ehler

The 168 meter long, 17861 dwt container ship Heinrich Ehler allided with the lock at the Kiel Canal at Brunsbuettel, Germany.  The vessel was leaving the lock when the bow thruster malfunctioned causing the stern to strike the side of the lock.  The lock wall suffered some damage while the container ship suffered only slight damage.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The water police conducted an investigation and allowed the Heinrich Ehler to continue on to Rotterdam.

Hamburg

The 85 meter long self-propelled barge Hamburg went aground on the Ijssel River near Zutphen, Netherlands.   The vessel was riding high as it was proceeding with no cargo when it approached a bridge.   The vessel would not be able to pass safely underneath the bridge when the Hamburg suffered an engine failure.   The master swerved the Hamburg away from the bridge and went aground.   The Hamburg was refloated later the same day.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

Hallgrimur Lost

The fishing vessel Hallgrimur sank in the Norwegian Sea some 270 kilometers from Stad, Norway.   The vessel with four crew on board was en route to Norway from Iceland to be scrapped.   The Hallgrimur encountered a severe storm with high winds and 10 to 15 meter waves .   The Norwegian authorities were alerted to the vessel sinking when the Hallgrimur’s EPIRB was activated.   Helicopters were dispatched to the area where one crewman was found in the water.   The crewman had his survival suit on and the helicopter pulled him from the sea.   The man was delivered to Alesund where he was taken to hospital.  Aircraft continued to search for the other three crewmen.   Reports state an empty lifeboat and debris in the water, but no signs of the missing men.
