Nine Boats Sunk by Snow

According to local news reports, the record-breaking snow in Juneau, Alaska has resulted in multiple vessels of various sizes to sink in the Gastineau Channel within the Juneau harbor. The Juneau harbor typically operates with a smaller workforce during the winter months and were quickly overwhelmed by the heavy snowfall. On December 30, there had been 16 inches of snow and by the end of December the total snowfall had reached 50 inches.

The workers in the harbor would clear snow off nearly 50 vessels, but at least 9 would either capsize or sink. This includes many personal watercraft along with larger vessels. Reports state the 54 foot fishing vessel Julie Ann sunk in the harbor. Reports state that workers are dewatering and refloat the impacted vessels, but efforts have been hampered by weather and resources.

nickoVISION

January 1, 2026 | Grounding

On the early morning of December 31, 2005, the 135 meter long self-propelled passenger ship nickoVISION (IMO: 4029860) ran aground on the Danube River near Gönyű, Hungary. The nickoVISION had departed from Passau bound for Budapest with 200 passengers when it grounded due to low water levels on the Danube near the 1792 kilometer marker. Unable to free itself, the vessel requested assistance.

With water levels below normal and were falling, a tug was requested to assist with refloating. After multiple attempts to refloat the nickoVISION failed, the passengers and crew remained on the stranded vessel overnight until another passenger ship could be brought on site.

On January 1, the 135 meter long Viva Two (MMSI: 269057829) arrived on site and all the passengers were transferred safely off the nickoVISION. There were no reports of injuries. Reports state the vessel would be refloated as soon as water levels allow.

Nuevo Monteveo

December 29, 2025 | Fire

On the morning of December 29, the 13 meter long fishing vessel Nuevo Monteveo caught fire in the Bay of Biscay some 8 miles from Playa Franca Rivadeva, Spain. The four crew on the Nuevo Monteveo abandoned ship into a life raft as the fire swept through the fishing vessel. Fortunately, all were rescued by the nearby 9 meter long fishing vessel Eva Dos (MMSI: 224224340) who transported them to San Vicente de la Barquera, Spain. An ambulance was waiting for the crew, but the crew were reported to be in good condition with only sustaining minor bruises.

The Salvamento Maritimó would dispatched the 15 meter long search and rescue vessel Salvamar Castor (MMSI: 224007650) to assist in fighting the fire on the Nuevo Monteveo. The fire would be extinguished a short time later.

The Nuevo Monteveo sustained severe damage from the blaze with much of the superstructure gutted. No further details reported.
