Nina Otaki

On December 20, the 80 foot long, 63 ton schooner Nina Otaki ran aground in Discovery Bay on Beckett Point, Washington. The schooner had been at anchor when it was blown ashore by strong winds and driven up onto the rocky beach. No reports of injuries. The Coast Guard responded and dispatched a team to remove fuel off the vessel.  Reports state the vessel was still aground several days after the incident.

The Nina Otaki had run aground before off Point Wilson Lighthouse in 2017.  The vessel remained on the beach for several days before it was refloated. The vessel is unique as it’s hull is made of iron-reinforced concrete.

January 15 Update

The schooner remains aground on the beach. Reports state there is some uncertainty if the Nina Otaki will be pulled off the beach or not. The current owner has not arranged salvage. The vessel may be removed off the beach by order of the Washington DNR.

Nearchos

The 87 meter long, 750 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Nearchos ran aground on the islet of Nea Kameni off Santorini, Greece. The Nearchos was underway with 13 crew and five passengers along with their 5 lorries bound to Thira from Mykonos when it ran ashore on the islet.  The ro-ro ferry sustained damage to its hull along the portside of the foreship.

The vessel contacted authorities who dispatched several vessels to the scene along with divers to inspect the hull.  The Greek Coast Guard deployed booms around the ferry to contain any pollution that may be released.  Reports state the passengers were safely evacuated.

 

Nyerere

The ro-ro passenger ferry Nyerere capsized on Lake Victoria near Ukora Island, Tanzania.  The Nyerere was within a hundred meters of landing at the dock when it lost stability and rolled over.  Nearby boats witnessed the ferry turning over and rushed to the scene.  They were able to rescued more than 100 people from the water.  Rescuers also recovered 40 bodies from the water. Authorities expect to recover more bodies in the following days.

Tanzanian authorities state there was an indeterminate number of passengers on board the ferry.   Some news accounts suggest the Nyerere was overloaded and could have more than 250 persons on board at the time of the incident. Reports do state the Nyerere had undergone maintenance in recent months and was considered seaworthy.

 

Update 21 September 2018

Initial reports on the number of survivors were incorrect.  Authorities now state only 38 people survived the capsizing and some 100 bodies have been recovered. The total number who were on board the Nyerere may never be determined. Reports state the person who had the manifest was lost and the equipment that tracked how many persons actually boarded the ferry.
