On the evening of November 12, the 108.5 meter long self-propelled barge Omega (MMSI: 244770363) caught fire on the Twentekanaal at the port of Goor, Netherlands. The Omega was hauling a cargo of scrap metal when a fire broke out in the cargo.  The vessel berthed at a quay where the local fire brigade were called to fight the blaze. Firefighters deployed a crane over the vessel and spray foam over the burning cargo until the fire was brought under control.

No reports of injuries to the crew of the Omega or the fire fighters. The extent of damage was not disclosed.

Odyssey FR70

On the morning of October 29, the 23 meter long, 140 gt fishing vessel Odyssey FR70 (IMO: 8644876) sank in the North Sea some 140 miles east of the Firth of Forth, Scotland. Authorities and nearby fishing vessels were alerted when the Odyssey‘s EPIRB distress beacon had been activated. Authorities launched a fixed-wing aircraft and sent out broadcasts to nearby fishing vessels to begin a search and rescue for the crew of the Odyssey.  Fortunately, a nearby fishing vessel found all six crew of the Odyssey safe in a life raft. No reports of injuries.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The cause of the sinking was not disclosed. The status of the investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch can be viewed here.

O Cantiño

O Cantiño

On November 1, the 31.5 meter long 263 gt fishing vessel O Cantiño (IMO: 9174830) became disabled in the Bay of Biscay 15 miles off Burela, Spain. The O Cantiño had its propeller get entangled with the fishing gear and went adrift. The vessel requested assistance with the Salvamento Marítimo out of Finisterre dispatching the support vessel Salvamar Alioth to the scene. The Salvamar Alioth took the O Cantiño under tow and proceed safely to the port of Burela.  No reports of injuries to the 9 crew on board and no pollution released.
