Ohio River Ride

A crewman took an unexpected ride down the Ohio River near Wheeling, West Virginia.   The man was working on shifting cargo on a fully loaded coal barge when the mooring lines broke loose.   For 15 minutes, the crewman floated down the Ohio River towards the Pike Island lock and dam.   A towboat responded and was able to safely rescue the crewman.   The barge was secured, but only 100 yards from the dam.   The Coast Guard reported that several days of heavy rain was to blame for the barge breaking loose.   There was no injuries, damage or pollution released.

Ocean Dragon Fire

The 200 ton, 25 meter long fishing vessel Ocean Dragon had a large fire while berthed in Ramsgate Harbour, United Kingdom.   The fire broke out in the engine room when a diesel generator overheated.   Thirty firefighters from Ramsgate, Thanet and Margate fought the blaze.    Reports state the engine room was severely damaged.

Ohio Towboat sinks

The 58 foot twin screw towboat Jo Ann McGinnis sank in the Ohio River off the Wurtland Riverport,Kentucky.  The towboat was making sure a barge station was properly secured as water levels on the Ohio River have risen to flood stage.   The Jo Ann McGinnis began to take on water and went down close to shore.   The pilot on board was forced to swim to shore.  An investigation is being conducted into the cause of the accident.   No reports on pollution being released.   The coast guard has place a marker to keep other watercraft away from the area.  The Jo Ann McGinnis was built in 1975 by Ashland Drydocking Co and powered by two Cummins KT19 diesels, 850 hp engines.
