On January 4, the 190 meter long, 53514 dwt bulk carrier Panoria (IMO: 9480930) caught fire in South China Sea some 23 miles off Cape Eluanbi, Taiwan. The Panoria was headed to Nantong from Singapore when a fire broke out in the engine room. The crew after some effort were able to extinguish the blaze, but not after the main engine sustained damage. The cargo vessel lost power and and went adrift. Three crew suffered burns from the incident and one crew member was seriously injured and required medical treatment.

The Taiwan Coast Guard received a distress call from the Panoria and dispatched five vessels and a helicopter to assist. The helicopter arrived a few hours later and was able to safely evacuated all four injured crew. The helicopter took the injured crew to Kaohsiung where they were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A tug was requested to take the Panoria under tow to Kaohsiung. The Coast Guard stated it would monitor the situation. No reports of pollution released.

Patrick J. Studdert

On the evening of December 29, the 28 meter long towboat Patrick J. Studdert (MMSI: 367534690) collided with the 225 meter long, 77073 dwt bulk carrier Clara B (IMO: 9304083) on the Mississippi River near the Hale Boggs Bridge in Luling, Louisiana. The Patrick J. Studdert sustained hull damage and uncontrolled water ingress from the collision. The five crew on board the towboat were forced to abandoned ship before the vessel sank. All the crew would later be rescued and taken to hospital for evaluation. The Clara B did not report any significant damage and proceeded to anchor nearby. No reports of injuries on either vessel.

Reports state the Patrick J. Studdert sank in 90 feet of water and a sheen of diesel fuel pollution was visible over the wreck. The Coast Guard and local authorities are monitoring the wreck for any further pollution being released. The incident is under investigation.

Phillip Bay

On the afternoon of December 26, the 180 meter long, 38683 dwt bulk carrier Phillip Bay (IMO: 9714757) caught fire in the English Channel some 40 kilometers north of Cherbourg, France. The fire started in the living quarters aboard the bulk carrier and sent out a distress call. French authorities dispatched a Navy helicopter with a response team including two fire fighters and a nautical expert. The tug Abeille Liberte and SNSM lifeboat were deployed assisted by an United Kingdom patrol boat. A few hours later the fire fighters extinguished the blaze. No reports of injuries.

Reports state there was no damage to the cargo of food on board. The extent of damage to the living quarters was not disclosed. The Phillip Bay was escorted to Le Havre where it undergo inspection and repairs.
