The 2070 dwt tanker Pavit went ashore at Juhu Beach near Mumbai, India. The tanker became disabled after the engine failed and drifted ashore. However, there was no crew on board and no distress call was sent to the authorities. It is suspected that the Pavit broke down in the Persian Gulf and the tanker’s crew was rescued sometime during the first week of July. After the rescue, the Pavit was left adrift until it went ashore on the coast of India. Authorities state it will take up to three weeks to free the stranded vessel.
Phoenix Off South Africa
The 164 meter long bulk freighter Phoenix went aground in heavy seas in Christmas Bay near Durban, South Africa. The Phoenix was under the control of a skelton crew as it was headed to India to be scrapped. As the vessel encountered rough seas, the crew dropped anchor to ride out the bad weather. However, the anchor line broke and the vessel began to drift towards shore. A nearby salvage tug attempted to connect a towline to pull the Phoenix to deeper water, but the weather conditions made it impossible. Waves were 4 to 6 meters and winds reached up to 30 knots. Pushed by the waves, the vessel struck bottom some 200 meters from the shore. The NSRI responded sending out three helicopters who airlifted all 15 crew to safety. A salvage company has already begun operations, but it is likely the vessel will be cut for scrap where it currently rests.
Pollution in the Mittelland Canal

Reports state the inland oil tanker Tanya was detained on the Mittelland Canal near Lohnde, Germany, after a passing boater noticed a track of oil in the water. The boater had alerted the master of the Tanya who contacted the authorities. The local fire department responded and deployed an oil boom to keep the diesel fuel spreading into the channel. Divers inspected the hull of the Tanya and discovered a 15 centimeter crack along the hull. A special type of plaster was placed into the gap as a temporary repair to prevent further leaking. The master of the Tanya reported that he had grounded the vessel earlier when he steered the vessel closer to shore to allow a passing motor vessel to go by. Reports state 150 liters of diesel has been released. The authorities have charged the master of the Tanya for water pollution.
