Thamesborg

On the early morning of September 6, the 172 meter long, 21359 dwt cargo vessel Thamesborg (IMO: 9546459) ran aground in the Franklin Strait off Prince of Wales Island, Nunavut, Canada. The Thamesborg had departed from Lianyungang, China bound for Baie-Comeau, Quebec when it stranded. The cargo vessel sustained hull damage with multiple ballast tanks holed, but the cargo holds and fuel tanks remained intact.

The Canadian Coast Guard was alerted and dispatched the 83 meter long buoy tender Sir Wilfrid Laurier (IMO: 8320456) which arrived at the incident site some 9 hours later. The 147 meter long, 12396 dwt  heavy lift vessel Miena Desgagnes (IMO: 9700380) was nearby and proceeded to the area to assist. Reports state that a salvage team were proceeding to the area in the effort to refloat the Thamesborg.

Authorities did not disclose the cause of the grounding.  There were no reports of injuries or pollution released.

Thanh Thanh Dat 99

On the early morning of August 26, the 151 meter long, 22332 dwt bulk carrier Thanh Thanh Dat 99 (IMO: 9223655) ran aground in Tien Trang Sea off Binh village, Tien Trang, Vietnam. The Thanh Thanh Dat 99 departed from Nam Dinh bound for Nghi Son.  As it approached the anchorage near Binh village, the bulk carrier dropped its anchor, but it dragged due to the strong winds and heavy seas caused by Typhoon Kajiki. The waves pushed the Thanh Thanh Dat 99 ashore until it was resting just 70 meters off the beach.  

Authorities were able to rescue all 19 crew safely off the vessel.  Reports stated the crew had contacted the Nghi Son for assistance refloating the bulk carrier.  No reports of pollution released.

Tenacity Venture

On August 14, the 247 meter long, 114439 dwt tanker Tenacity Venture (IMO:9773052) became disabled on the Bosphorus near Kandilli, Turkey. The Tenacity Venture was headed for Romania from Gibraltar with a cargo of 90,730 tons of crude oil when it suffered engine failure in the strait. The tanker contacted Turkish authorities who dispatched the tugs Kurtarma-5 (IMO: 9463164), Kurtarma-8 (IMO: 9598610) and Kurtarma-11 (IMO: 9854399) to assist. Escorted by Kurtarma-8, the Tenacity Venture was towed to an anchorage off Büyükdere where it was assisted by Kurtarma-5 and Kurtarma-11.

No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.  During the incident, traffic was halted temporarily in the Bosphorus.
