The 63 meter long self-propelled barge Undine 2 allided against a pier off Emmerich, Germany. The Undine 2 was proceeding on the Rhine from Tolkamer with a cargo of 700 tons of sand when it suffered engine failure. The crew attempted to keep the barge from going adrift by dropping the vessel’s anchor, but the current caused the Undine 2 to swing around and struck a floating pier. The Undine 2 suffered only minor scratches, but the pier was significantly damaged. The pier’s pontoon suffered water ingress and the gangway was twisted. No reports of injuries. Reports state estimated damage to the pier to be around 120,000 euros.

USNS Sgt. Matej Kocak

The 821 foot long. 24460 dwt logistics US Naval Vessel Sgt. Matej Kocak ran aground offf Uruma, Okinawa.  The container vessel stranded on a coral reef and was unable to refloat itself on the following high tide. Tugs were dispatched to help stabilized the vessel.  No reports of injuries to the 131 persons on board.  Reports state the vesssel hull had no damage and no pollution was released.

USS Hue City

The 9600 ton United States Navy guided-missile cruiser SS Hue City caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean.  The cruiser was en route to the Mediterranean Sea  from Mayport, Florida when a fire broke out.  The crew was able to extinguish the blaze, but the fire caused extensive damage to the vessel.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The SS Hue City proceeded back to Mayport for repairs.
